AMI Automation was awarded a project to upgrade an existing 100 MVA Alstom/GE Static Var Compensator (SVC) system at a steel plant in the Southwest. The project will modernize key control and power components to improve the system’s performance, reliability, and long-term operation.
The upgrade includes implementing DigiFCR® SVC, AMI Automation’s advanced SVC control solution built on the PXC real-time processor platform. DigiFCR® SVC provides high-speed monitoring, enhanced diagnostic tools, IBA Analyzer connectivity, and remote monitoring of the SVC’s status and operation.
The modernization will also include replacing the SCRs and fiber optics in the valve, as well as upgrading the cooling system controls and cooling unit. In addition, customers benefit from 24/7 technical support and high availability of spare parts to help maintain reliable system operation.
As part of the project, AMI will also implement SmartSVC®; a SmartFurnace® module that coordinates SVC´s operation according to the different stages and conditions of each heat. By optimizing how the SVC responds during furnace operation, SmartSVC® is designed to help increase the furnace’s average power and improve overall productivity.
These upgrades combine advanced SVC control, critical equipment modernization, and intelligent furnace coordination. The result is a more reliable and efficient system designed to support improved steelmaking performance and productivity.
