AMI Automation, a Resonac Company, has successfully implemented its advanced electric arc furnace (EAF) optimization systems to drive efficiency and productivity in stainless steel production. This project highlights AMI’s expertise in transforming EAF operations through cutting-edge technologies and collaborative execution.

Technologies Deployed

The project utilized AMI’s specialized solutions, including:

  • • DigitARC® PX3: For precise electrode regulation
  • • SmartARC®: Electrical optimization to enhance energy efficiency
  • • SmartFurnace® Oxygen module: For improved chemical energy utilization
  • • Slag module: Designed specifically for stainless steel applications

Execution and Implementation

A seamless installation and commissioning process, completed in just four weeks, ensured minimal disruption to operations. The implementation featured a phased approach:

    • • Initial optimization of electrical and chemical energy.
    • • Gradual transition to dynamic control systems for full SmartFurnace® functionality.
    • • Development of a tailored slag module to meet stainless steel production requirements.

Results and Impact

After six months of operation, significant improvements were achieved:

    • • 10.5% Reduction in graphite electrode consumption.
    • • Enhanced temperature prediction for improved heat cycle management.
    • • Stable performance with no adverse effects on critical indicators including power-on time or panel life.

Future Advancements

Future enhancements include expanded data integration, advanced energy balance analysis, and full deployment of the slag module. These efforts aim to optimize resource use, reduce costs, and further improve operational sustainability.
