AMI Automation is pleased to announce that SDI Columbus, part of Steel Dynamics’ Flat Roll Steel Group in Columbus, Mississippi, has selected AMI to modernize its Level 2 system for two Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and the common Scrap Yard Area.
AMI originally supplied the Level 2 systems for both EAFs in 2010. The new project was launched with a kick-off meeting in September 2026, marking the start of the modernization effort.
The upgraded platform will feature a modern software architecture designed to improve performance, simplify maintenance, and extend the platform’s lifecycle. By integrating the Scrap Handling System and both EAFs into a unified environment, the solution will support improved process coordination and material traceability across the melt shop.
Key enhancements include new software technology with improved performance, longer product life cycle, and less complex architecture for easy maintenance and support. The system will also support tracking of scrap, heats, and materials used, alongside detailed operational analysis and furnace performance benchmarking.
A key objective of the project is to ensure a seamless migration with no impact on production. The upgraded system is designed to maintain existing interfaces with other plant systems and will undergo comprehensive validation in shadow mode prior to switchover. This approach enables the project team to verify system performance under actual operating conditions, reduce implementation risk, and ensure a smooth transition.
The project builds on AMI’s long-standing relationship with SDI Columbus and its experience supporting the plant’s Level 2 systems. Both teams will progress through the phases of functional design, software development, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), installation, shadow-mode operation, switchover, and final optimization.
The modernization initiative will deliver a more maintainable software platform while providing enhanced tools for monitoring and analyzing melt shop operations.
