AMI Automation Awarded Multi-Million-Dollar Contract to Supply Power and Automation Systems for Next-Generation U.S. Iron and Steelmaking Project

AMI Automation has been awarded a multi-million-dollar contract to support the commercialization of a groundbreaking iron and steelmaking process. This innovative single-step technology converts low-grade iron ore, fines, and waste oxides directly into molten steel or high-purity iron, offering greater feedstock flexibility and improved efficiency compared with conventional production routes.

To power this breakthrough, AMI will adapt its proven power conversion, electrode regulation, and furnace automation technologies to a first-of-its-kind electric reduction-smelting application. The project includes the DigiRectifier™ high-power rectifier system, the DigitARC® PX3 electrode regulation system, and integrated furnace automation and control systems. By combining these technologies with AMI’s expertise, the integrated solution will provide the electrical power and control infrastructure required for this next-generation reduction-smelting process.

The DigiRectifier™ uses advanced control technology to provide fast and precise current regulation, high-speed response, and expanded diagnostics for demanding furnace applications. Its flexible configuration and integration capabilities simplify operation and facilitate long-term maintainability. Working in coordination with the DigitARC® PX3, the integrated system will provide advanced electrode regulation, real-time monitoring, and coordinated furnace control to support stable electrical power delivery, precise electrode control, and dependable furnace operation.

This project reinforces AMI Automation’s position at the forefront of iron and steelmaking innovation and supports the scale-up of U.S. production using domestic resources. By contributing to the establishment of a reliable domestic source of high-purity iron used in rare-earth permanent magnets this initiative will strengthen national supply chains and advance a more sustainable, reliable, and competitive future for American manufacturing.
